Shaft Flex Myths That Cost You Strokes

Flex letters on the shaft are marketing shorthand, not physics. Why two 'stiffs' can play completely differently — and what actually matters.

Walk into any big-box aisle and you will see Regular, Stiff, X-Stiff. Those labels suggest a universal scale. There is not one.

Myth 1: Swing speed alone picks your flex

Speed matters, but so does tempo, transition, release point, and how you load the shaft. Two players at 100 mph driver speed can need very different profiles — one smooth and late, one quick and aggressive.

Myth 2: All 'Stiff' shafts feel the same

Manufacturers do not share one flex standard. A Stiff from Brand A can play softer than a Regular from Brand B. Weight, torque, bend profile (tip vs mid vs butt), and balance point change how the club loads and how the face presents at impact.

Myth 3: Softer always means more distance

A shaft that is too soft for your delivery can add face variation, high spin, and left/right misses that erase any theoretical launch benefit. The goal is consistent center-face contact and predictable ball flight — not maximum whip.

Myth 4: You should copy a tour player's shaft

Tour players hit thousands of balls, get weekly fittings, and use shafts matched to their specific delivery. What works for them is data for them. Your miss pattern and speed band matter more than a logo.

What to ask in a fitting

  • What is the shaft weight (grams), not just flex letter?
  • Where does it bend — tip, mid, or butt?
  • How does dispersion compare across two options at similar launch?
  • Can we compare against my current gamer as a baseline?

A good fitter will show you the numbers and let the ball flight settle the argument.
